Radio Flyer Classic Wagon – 20th Century Icon
Born and raised in a small town outside of Venice, Italy, 16 year old Antonio Pasin nurtured his own American dream. His family sold their mule to buy his fare to America and upon his arrival Antonio headed to Chicago. It was here that he began looking for a job as a cabinet maker. Even though he was a very skilled craftsman having learnt the trade from his father and grandfather, work was difficult to find and he had to take any work he could find and finally took employment as a water boy for the sewer diggers.
Pasin worked hard and made his way through several jobs, by 1917 he had managed to save enough money to buy some used wood working equipment and rent a one room work-shop to house it in. From his small workshop he began to make toy wagons late into the wee hours to sell.
His business grew and by 1923 Pasin has employed several workers. The company was called the Liberty Coaster Company, named after the Statue of Liberty. Pasin himself sold his No.4 Liberty Coaster Wagon directly to stores.
The 1st pressed steel wagon was wheeled off the production line at the Liberty Coaster Company in the late 1920s, it was painted red and named by Pasin the ‘Radio Flyer’. Pasin was infatuated by the invention of the radio by Marconi and was fascinated by flight, hence the name ‘Radio Flyer’. The little red Radio Flyer Classic wagon is an iconic American toy and has been loved by children for over ninety years. It is said that with every little red Radio Flyer Classic wagon, one little boy or girl dreams of being an astronaut, a race car driver, a fire fighter, a hero.
Like the Original Red Wagon that gave the company its name, Radio Flyer as a company has also become an American Classic. Radio Flyer classic spans generations and is loved by each generation that discovers it just as much as the one before – creating new memories and sparking imaginations.
